Why use a typesetter

Technology has brought many improvements to publishing - speed, opportunity for great design, accuracy, and innovation. However, the book will only be as good as the people behind it. A word-processor doesn't make a great writer, like wise, InDesign doesn't make a good looking and easy reading book. Sure InDesign provides the tools, but the skill of the typesetter will shine through. Here is what we do at Orchard Publishing to ensure that your book will be a great book.

Typography

We pay special attention to the readability of the text. We take into consideration the target market's reading ability and ensure the typography will be the appropriate size and style, while still look elegant. For each title, the hyphenation and justification settings are tweeked to minimise loose lines and rivers running through the text.

Layout and structure

Accessibility to the content is imperative for the reader to enjoy the experience of reading your book. Structure and layout are integral parts of the book's design. The placement of pictures, diagrams and any other design features should always work to lead the reader and provide a logical path.

Consistency

Uniformity of page design and text formatting are some of the enduring qualities of the printed book. Every title should have a style guide listing the various editorial and typographic styles to be followed. If a publisher has not supplied one, we will consult with the publisher and editor to establish a style for any variations that we find.

Confidentiality

Your book is not revealed to anyone other than those working on the project.

Backup and archiving

All work is backed up daily and completed projects are archived on CD or DVD and a copy sent to the publisher once the title has been printed.
